Spiral Heat Exchanger Usage Tips: Key Points For Efficient Operation

Spiral heat exchangers, with their compact structure and high heat transfer efficiency, are widely used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and energy sectors. To fully leverage their performance advantages, mastering the following key usage techniques is essential:

1. Optimizing Fluid Distribution

Uneven fluid distribution within the spiral channel can lead to localized scaling or increased thermal resistance. It is recommended to install a guide plate at the inlet to ensure even flow of both media into the spiral channel. For high-viscosity fluids, the inlet flow velocity can be increased appropriately (recommended 0.5-1.2 m/s) to avoid dead zones. Practical examples show that proper fluid distribution can improve heat transfer efficiency by 15%-20%.

2. Temperature Differential Control and Scale Prevention

This equipment is suitable for operating with temperature differentials of ≤50°C. Excessive temperature differentials can easily cause thermal stress and deformation. When handling scaling-prone media, it is recommended to maintain a flow velocity of ≥0.8 m/s (for water systems) or ≥0.3 m/s (for oil systems) to prevent scale deposition through mechanical flushing. Regular 5% citric acid cycle cleaning (at 60-70°C for 2 hours) can restore heat exchange efficiency to over 85%.

3. Pressure Balance Maintenance

The spiral plate's pressure capacity is typically 0.6-1.0 MPa. The pressure differential across the plate must be strictly monitored during operation. If it exceeds the design value of 0.3 MPa, bypass pressure relief should be immediately activated. During extended periods of inactivity, it is recommended to purge residual media with compressed air and maintain a slight positive pressure (0.02-0.05 MPa) to prevent oxidation corrosion.

4. Adaptability to Special Operating Conditions

When handling corrosive media, 316L stainless steel or titanium spiral plates are preferred, and welds must undergo PT testing. For flammable and explosive fluids, a nitrogen protection system and electrostatic grounding must be installed to ensure safe operation.

Mastering these techniques can extend the life of a spiral heat exchanger by 3-5 years and reduce energy consumption by 10-15%. Regularly recording operating parameters (such as inlet and outlet temperature difference, pressure drop changes) and establishing maintenance files are important means to ensure long-term and efficient operation.
